Stakeholder Engagement Strategy for the Alliance for Coney Island
The Alliance for Coney Island
The Alliance for Coney Island (the Alliance) is dedicated to helping Coney Island and its diverse residential and commercial community thrive. Their mission is threefold: advocate for and promote the growth of the local business community, improve the quality of life for residents, and foster collaboration between the varied stakeholders that bring Coney Island to life both during the summer and year-round. To further support this vision and mission, the Alliance is leading a community process to create a Business Improvement District (BID) to serve residents, property owners, and businesses along Mermaid Avenue and in the Amusement District. The robust dialogue around the BID’s formation has included a strong base of support and a small but vocal misinformation campaign, the latter of which threatens BID formation efforts. In advance of the formal BID voting process in Summer 2019, Karp Strategies was retained to advise the Alliance on a holistic stakeholder engagement strategy to facilitate stronger communication and a shared understanding between the organization and its varied stakeholders. Karp Strategies worked closely with the Alliance to baseline the existing ecosystem around BID formation to inform the engagement strategy. Karp Strategies developed a menu of specific tools to counter the misinformation about the purpose of the BID formation, maintain the enthusiasm of preexisting BID supporters, boost the profile and benefits of the BID throughout the community, and track the status of voting stakeholders. With a rich understanding of community dynamics in hand, the firm delivered a menu of tailored stakeholder engagement strategies and a suite of originally designed infographics to provide clear, accurate information to counter misconceptions around assessment value, staffing, and other community-identified issues. The firm also designed and executed an interactive meeting for residents, garner feedback, share information and build consensus around the BID formation process.
