Save Our Streets (S.O.S.), a community-based violence prevention organization serving the Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhoods of Brooklyn, mediates conflicts surrounding gun violence. Grounded in the model of Cure Violence, S.O.S. treats violence like an infectious disease, wherein it can be understood, diagnosed, and treated through targeted community interventions that pinpoint the violence at its source. As a leader in the field of violence prevention, and as an organization deeply embedded in its community, S.O.S. often finds itself talking and writing about its surroundings in a variety of settings and to a variety of audiences. In light of this public- and media-facing work, S.O.S. seeks better, up-to-date, and unique data about the communities in which it works. To help S.O.S. develop a cohesive narrative, Karp Strategies collected and analyzed data from multiple public sources about area demographics, educational achievement, and crime rates, closely examining four geographies at the census tract level. The firm parlayed this analysis into a summary memo and supporting sample charts and graphics that SOS can use for its various critical needs.
