Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, SoHo's Public Realm, and Expanding Our Team

We hope that you enjoyed 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month! Did you know that the first Hispanic Heritage Week was celebrated in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson? By 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the observance of Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM). The United States now celebrates HHM on September 15 - October 15 every year. The start date of HHM is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

The 2018 census predicts that by 2060, there will be 111 million Hispanics in the United States. As an urban planning firm, we recognize the impact that all immigrant groups have had on US cities and urbanism overall. To celebrate, we encourage everyone to read Barrio America: How Latinos Saved the American City by A.K. Sandoval-Strausz. Sandoval-Strausz focuses on two barrios (neighborhoods) -- Chicago’s Little Village and Dallas’ Oak Cliff -- and highlights the social, cultural, and economic contributions that Latinos have made to these neighborhoods.

Since December 2020, Karp Strategies has had the pleasure of working on the SoHo Public Realm Vision Plan with the SoHo Broadway Initiative (SBI) in partnership with the SBI Public Realm Task Force, led by consulting partner Street Plans. After months of hard work and collaboration, the Public Realm Vision plan has been released and Little Prince Plaza is now open!

The Vision plan offers forward-looking ideas for the future of Broadway between Houston and Canal. The Vision plan offers forward-looking ideas for the future of Broadway between Houston and Canal, and we cannot wait to hear what you think. Little Prince Plaza, located on Prince Street between Broadway and Mercer Street, is a new plaza demonstration project in partnership with NYCDOT that will be open for all Saturdays in October (October 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th).
